Pusztavacs – the centre of the
country
Pusztavacs, a village of 1500 inhabitants, lies
in the Southern part of Pest county, 50 km from Budapest. Within
its boundaries lies the geographical centre of the country. The
co-ordinates of this geographical centre are: latitude 47 degrees
and 11 seconds; longitude 19 degrees and 30 seconds. The tower
representing the geographical centre of the country was erected
in 1978, according to the plans of the architect József
Kerényi. The signal tower and its environs are protected.
On Hunyadi Square the ruins of a church from the 15th century
can be found. In front of this historic monument a memorial park
using wooden head boards was established to commemorate the thirteen
martyrs of Arad. The one-time Coburg Chateau is situated in the
centre of the village. In the vicinity of the competition area
there is a centre created for horse riding by a Finnish entrepreneur
who also operates an ostrich farm.
Terrain – Map
The competition area is situated on the NW part
of the sand ridge between the Danube and Tisza rivers at a height
of 120-150 metres. The surface is mostly settled sand. The sand
dunes created by the wind produce interesting formations. The
vast majority of the terrain is covered by oak forest planted
70-90 years ago mixed in with clearings of different sizes and
semi open areas of varied vegetation. In the rest of the competition
area the forest consists of old pine and acacia of various ages
whose run ability is variable. There is a good forest ride and
path network. The forest lacks man made objects, so the majority
of control sites will be on contour and vegetation features.
The area has first been mapped in 1963 and its map was the first
colour map expressly published for the purposes of orienteering.
(available here) Three years later there was an update, but that was published
in black and white. (available here) For the next 40 years there have been no more
maps and no competitions on the area. Therefore, we hope that
everybody will find the terrain new and exciting and the Postás
Cup 2006 will provide every competitor with an exciting challenge.
